Santa Barbara Castle

Is the most important historic monument in the village of Teguise. It dates back to the 16 century when it was originally built as a watch tower by Sancho de Herrera its history is markes by a series of invasions suffered at the hands of pirates and corsains.

The experise of the renowned architect Leonardo Torriani was reinforce the fortress-indeed in 1991 the fortress was converted into a museum dedicated to the history of Canarian Emegration to America. It houses an exceptional collection of ethnographic exhibits that is well worth a visit not least because it is probably the first museum of its kind.
